“a unique, exhilarating experience… There are certainly thrills to be had from Dirty Market”
Time Out (on Bacchaefull – Fringe Show of the Year 2007)
Time Out Fringe Show of the Year winner Dirty Market return with a new site-specific piece.
Set amongst the decayed, stained-glass splendor of rediscovered gem, Asylum Chapel Peckham, Something About You… fuses theatre, dance and art to take the audience on a journey into a mythic past. Inspired by Electra, this lyrical, comic, sometimes violent piece is a call to action: stop waiting for heroes and take your own authority, if you really want to feel alive.
Egg is lost. Caught in a loop, she can’t leave her flat – even when mummy comes calling. But when a strange man from her past decides to visit, everything changes. Memories of another life come flooding in – one in which she called the shots – and Egg decides it’s time to act.
Dirty Market was founded by Georgina Sowerby and Jon Lee in 2005. DMT are inspired by the French concept of Bricolage. They create their shows using playfulness, improvisation and trial and error with surprising results. In 2007, they won Time Out Fringe Show of the Year for Bacchaefull.
Director/performer Georgina Sowerby trained as an actor at Drama Centre London. She’s acted with many companies including the National, Royal Court, Almeida, the Tron Glasgow, the Wrestling School, National Theatre of Scotland and Soho Theatre. She co-founded Moving Arts Initiatives, creating hands-on story/art events for children and their families in Peckham, in association with Tate Modern. She’s also been teaching acting and directing for drama schools since 1998.
Jon Lee trained at Rose Bruford College and the Laban Institute. He directed The Persians at The International Festival of Ancient Greek Drama in Cyprus and has created several performance art works performed at The Foundry, Shoreditch and BAC. He teaches and directs for City Lit, London Southbank University and Drama Centre London. Jon recently played Jason in a site-specific version of Medea for the Annouchka Bayley Company.
This production is Arts Council Lottery funded, made with the support of Oval House Theatre. A work-in-progress version of Something About You… was performed at Soho Theatre Studio in Spring 2011.
“scintillating… a brilliant exploration of Euripides’ original”
