Revitalisation Of Monaco’s Art Scene

Villa Paloma, the second gallery of Nouveau Musée National de Monaco (NMNM), will open on 18 September 2010 with the exhibition “La Carte d’après Nature”, guest curated by German artist Thomas Demand. Housed in one of Monte Carlo’s last remaining Belle Epoque villas, the new gallery will present an international programme of contemporary art exhibitions and is part of NMNM’s ambitious project to turn Monaco into a thriving art destination.

The opening exhibition, “La Carte d’après Nature” (18 September 2010 – 22 February 2011), takes its title from a short-lived art magazine by René Magritte and will present works by eighteen international artists, including Tacita Dean, Thomas Demand, Martin Boyce, Rodney Graham, René Magritte and Luigi Ghirri. Magritte’s publication, which he began in 1952 and ran for fourteen issues only, consisted of postcards, featuring loosely connected poetry, illustrations, short stories and other contributions. In a similar fashion, Thomas Demand has selected artworks for the exhibition that are related to each other in an associative manner.

Visitors to Monaco will this autumn also be able to see “Yinka Shonibare MBE: Looking Up” (until 16 January 2011) at Villa Sauber, the second gallery of Nouveau Musée National de Monaco which reopened in June this year. “Looking Up” is the first in a series of planned exhibitions to focus on the interaction between art and performing arts. Monaco has a long history of performing arts, which Villa Sauber’s exhibition programme aims to throw fresh light on.

Villa Paloma and Villa Sauber are both headed up by Marie-Claude Beaud, the former Director of the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain and MUDAM, Luxembourg. Since becoming Director of NMNM in 2009, Beaud has been leading the way in revitalizing Monaco’s art scene.

Recent high-profile exhibitions in the Principality include “Cornucopia”, a selection of key works by Damien Hirst at the Musee Océanographique de Monaco (until 30 September 2010), a collaboration with NMNM, and “Carsten Höller: Amanite Tue Mouche / The Fly Agaric” show at the Pavillon Bosio, Ecole Superieure d’Arts Pastique (until 30 August 2010).
